Fernhurst's longest-running side, the Sunday XI, tackled their longest-running fixture* with panache at a chilly Rec on the last Sunday of April. In a season-opening 'two jumper' affair it was a very warm welcome for the nomadic Ancient Mariners.
FCC's skipper won the toss and duly fluffed it amid mumbled good manners, allowing the visitors to bat. This really was a treat as the opening game in the last few years has been rained off. J Gumpell and R Harris were pick of the bunch for the visitors with 51 and 46 respectively but excellent Fernhurst bowling restricted them to 129 off 35 overs. 2018 Player of the Season Sam Meier bagged 4-8 while Mark 'Harold' Langridge got 2-26. Rob Unwin's remodelled short run up paid great dividends but was not so admired as the 'Diamond Cut' he'd applied to the outfield beforehand.
'Best Tea on the Circuit' was acclaimed by a grovelling opposition before Fernhurst padded up. 130 was eminently gettable but, dear reader, you have heard that sort of loose talk before. Vice Captain Matt Westley scored a four immediately preceding a run out which had the whole village crying, er, 'Viiillllllllaaaaaaaaaaagggge'. Then, in a piece of inspired captaincy, Will Dyer was promoted up the order to three, commencing a stylish innings which only finished at 54. A stunned Simon Vigar scored 25 runs not out, at which point he announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Some generous fielding ensured FCC cantered over the line with five wickets spare like the lithesome filly they are not.
Men of the Match (and duly dropped): Meier & Dyer.
*someone really should check this stuff. For once.
