After a downpour of biblical proportions the final match of the season was reduced to 30 overs aside on a wet and unpredictable Lynchmere wicket. Winning the toss, Captain for the day Sam Meier put Lynchmere into bat in the hope that the wicket would dry out by the time we batted. The fairground music heard from Hollycombe was very apt for some of the play witnessed on this final afternoon of the season.
The opening bowlers – Sam Meier and Mark Langridge pinned down the opening batsman and after 10 overs Lynchmere were only on 20 and had lost 2 wickets. Jude Unwin and Nico Dhal followed the opening pair and bagged a wicket apiece. Lynchmere’s batting was dominated by the opener Hamilton who finished on 33 having been expertly run out by Sam and Jon Meier. The bowling was completed by Andy Baker and Jon Meier cleaning up the tail with a brace of wickets each. Lynchmere culminated on 59 but on a difficult wicket nobody was complacent. Pick of the bowlers was Mark Langridge taking 2 for 11 of 6 overs.
Fernhurst were to find just how difficult a wicket it was and wickets fell regularly with only Westley (15) and Baker (27no) getting into double figures. Whilst the wickets continued to fall, valuable contributions from Ralph, Freeman and Dhal enabled Fernhurst to reach the target in 22 overs for the loss of 5 wickets. Pick of the batsmen was Andy Baker steering the team to victory in the final match of the season.
