Fernhurst Cricket Club I'Anson 1st XI v Rowledge VI on Sat 01 May 2010 at 14:00
Fernhurst Cricket Club Won by 29 runs

Match report Fernhurst played their first home game of the season against the unknown quantity of Rowledge IVs, newly promoted to Division 3 but, on paper at least, struggling after two early defeats.

Rowledge won the toss and decided to put Fernhurst into bat, a decision that Fernhurst were pretty happy with given their strong batting line-up. However, after a solid enough start, Dowdel was bowled by Austin for 6, with the scores only on 12 and it looked as though the decision to bowl had been a good one. The situation had changed by the next wicket, though, as Alan Foster joined Mike Allen at the crease and, between them, they pushed the score up to 59 after 12 overs making a big score look likely.

The balance shifted, though, when Ahmed was brought into the attack. His first over was dismissed for 17, but it also saw the first of 3 important wickets that removed the heart of Fernhurst's top order, including the key wicket of Mike Allen for 58. The score was now 103 for 4 off 22 overs, with the game firmly in the balance. Fortunately, Bill Gourlay set up camp on the wicket for 20 overs making 42, with strong support from Holloway (13) and Bristow (17*) pushing Fernhust through to a solid total of 185 for 9 off 45 overs.

The Rowledge innings did not start well, with Brown catching a top edge to Winn with the score on just 4 and Fernhurst's confidence buoyant. However, the arrival of N.Taylor at the wicket swiftly changed this as he demonstrated a fine array of offside strokes, using the pace of the bowlers to his advantage and quickly racing the score through to 51 off 10 overs, on track for victory.

Cue a huddle of the Fernhurst senior players and a change of bowling, with Mike Allen's spin being brought on. The change was inspired as Taylor made virtually his only mistake of the innings to miss Allen's fourth ball and lose his offside bail. Over the following overs the game see-sawed as Pow attempted to get enough support to push towards an unlikely win, however a steady stream of wickets meant that the run rate climbed above 5 an over and he was stranded on an unbeaten 39. Lewis had redressed the balance from a difficult earlier spell to finish with 3 wickets, and Foster weighed in with 2 to finish off the match.

Rowledge were all out for 156 in the 42nd over, still 30 runs away from victory. However, they had shown themselves to be a team with a lot of potential, and the Fernhurst players would be very surprised not to find them much higher up the table by the time they next meet.

Fernhurst seek to continue their winning ways away at Tilford.
