Kingsley v Fernhurst Cricket Club I'Anson 1st XI on Sat 05 Jun 2010 at 14:00
Fernhurst Cricket Club Won by six wickets

Match report Old but Gold - Captain steers Fernhurst to sixth win

Unbeaten partnership of 133 makes the difference

Once again Fernhurst found themselves testing the depth of their squad, heading to fourth placed Kingsley with their three main strike bowlers missing. With Bristow, Holloway and Lewis all absent, it was down to the back-up bowlers to show that they could meet the challenge.

Having won the toss, Fernhurst opted to field, and on a hot afternoon this soon looked like a brave choice. Parrott and Moulds treated any loose ball ruthlessly, which had them ticking along at over 4 runs an over and up into the 70s without loss. Fernhurst decided that some variation was required, and the introduction of Mike Allen's spin brought the first wicket as Parrott was bowled, followed by Mould being run out. Usman Tanweer and Alan Foster continued the pressure for Fernhurst, both taking 3 wickets as only Francis was unable to get above 20. Pete Winn then cleared the tail with the final two wickets. So, the bowling shortage didn't seem to have created too many problems, and Fernhurst went into tea satisfied with Kingley's final score of 177 all out in the 46th over, particularly after such a strong start.

Kingsley's bowlers opened up brightly with Francis and Joe Randell looking lively, but Boutell and Foster looked to have things firmly under control as the total moved up to 32. However, the tables turned quickly as first Foster was caught by the keeper off Francis, and Boutell was unlucky to see one down the leg side catch his boot and bounce back onto the stumps. Harry Lambert fell quickly to a run out, and finally Usman Tanweer was caught & bowled by Nick Randall. With the score now at 45 for 4 off 15 overs, Kingsley's tail was in the air, and Fernhurst were in severe trouble.

Mike Allen, Fernhurst's skipper, was joined by Bill Gourlay, the vice captain, and it was time for the old boys to dig in and try to steer their side to safety. Nick Randall, Matt Jeffs and Oli Cooper all bowled tight lines, but they were unable to achieve a breakthrough as Fernhurst took their singles and moved the score up into three figures. Kingsley's bowlers continued to look for chances and were unlucky to see a couple go down, and this allowed the scoreboard to tick along further towards the target. Mike Allen was now confident enough to let rip for a couple of overs bringing Fernhurst victory with three overs to spare, and an unbeaten partnership of 133 runs. Fernhurst finished with 178 for 4 off 41.1 overs.

Fernhurst chase a 7th straight win on 12th June at home versus Tongham. Followed by England's opening World Cup game in the pavilion.
