Tongham v Fernhurst Cricket Club I'Anson 1st XI on Sat 07 Aug 2010 at 14:00
Fernhurst Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report Fernhurst were left with their own Halloween moment as Meyer took them apart first with the ball, and then the bat. Having lost a crucial toss, Fernhurst were put in to bat in the rain and struggled to come to terms with highly unpredictable bounce and movement. Fernhurst were all out for 84 from 39.4 overs, with Meyer taking 3 wickets for 23. Tongham's response gave Fernhurst some hope as they stumbled to 35 for 4 from 11 overs, but Meyer again saw Tongham safely home reaching 85 for 4 from 23.2 overs.

Fernhurst had seen their best batting performance of the season last week, so were expecting good things, particularly as Tongham's ground was unavailable, so an "away" game was actually played at Fernhurst. However, as the rain came down before the game it became clear that winning the toss would be vital. Tongham duly won the toss and, after looking to have made the wrong choice as the score moved to 25 in 6 overs, started to get into their stride. From that point onwards Fernhurst looked extremely uncomfortable as the ball swung around in the humid conditions, and bounce became extremely unpredictable on a damp wicket. Lady luck also went AWOL as three batsmen were out after playing-on, and two were caught by juggling acts in the slips. However, Meyer and Graham took advantage of the conditions, bowled well, and took five wickets between them, as the Fernhurst tail turned suicidal. Fernhurst were all out for a paltry 84 from 39.4 overs.

Having seen how difficult batting had been, Fernhurst knew that a win was possible, if unlikely. Good bowling from Lewis and Holloway certainly made this look on the cards as Tongham' s first four wickets fell for only 35 runs. However, the wicket was drying out and it was all a question of whether Meyer could stay in and steer his side home. Unfortunately for the home, or was it away, side they managed to drop him in his first over and from that point on he never looked in trouble. He saw Tongham home, capably aided by Trevor Carrington, reaching 37 not out as they reached the total in the 24th over.

The promotion battle looks to be turning into a three horse race, but with only two to go up can Fernhurst halt their slide before it's too late !? Dropping 30 points in 4 games certainly isn't promotion form !!!
