Match report Wood Street Brothers Fell The Fern

Ahmeds Excel With Bat And Ball

Wood Street visited Fernhurst on the back of a defeat to table topping Chiddingfold, whilst Fernhurst were riding high after two wins from two. A covered wicket meant that conditions were good despite the overnight downpour, but Wood Street won an important toss as muggy conditions bode well for the bowlers.

Fernhurst started cautiously, but Boutell soon had the measure of Azeem and started to score freely. At the other end S.Ahmed was bowling a beautiful line, keeping an extremely tidy economy rate together. Aside from Boutell, Fernhurst's strong batting line-up really failed to fire, with Dowdell and Bristow falling relatively cheaply. Wood Street had opted to change their attack with the spin of R.Ahmed coming into the attack, and it was from his bowling that the key incident of the innings occurred. Bowling to Spinks, who was unbeaten in both previous I'Anson innings, an edge went down to Strudwick at slip. The fielding side were sure it had carried, the batsman was sure that it hadn't, and neither umpire was able to confirm either way. Sportingly, Spinks walked, but with only 8 to his account that cost Fernhurst some runs. The rest of the Fernhurst middle order really failed to fire, as R.Ahmed continued to bowl a tidy, but tempting line. Boutell, however, was still there and keeping the score ticking along, passing 50 and rapidly approaching a well deserved century. Unfortunately for him, on 96 he skyed a huge shot to mid on and Thomas did very well to hold the catch. That somewhat took the steam out of Fernhurst, and it was only through a fine lower order cameo by Steve Tytler, scoring 24, that the total reached a relatively respectable 178 all out from 48 overs. R.Ahmed finished with a fine 7 wickets for 62 runs.

The Wood Street innings coincided with a dip in the weather, a lengthy spell of poor light, and some short sharp showers. Fernhurst's opening bowlers started well, putting the pressure on the Dobson brothers, with Gourlay getting Josh for 5. However, this brought S.Ahmed to the crease and he did very well to survive an opening onslaught, in particular from Spinks, that will have left him with a very bruised thigh. A bowling change saw Josh Allen remove Matt Dobson, but that simply saw Buckmaster arrive and form a very good partnership with Ahmed. Both batsmen took their time, picked their shots, and rode their luck, but this was the moment that Wood Street took the initiative - with Ahmed even managing to put a Spinks delivery into the oak tree. Buckmaster would eventually fall for 33 to Mike Allen, but Ahmed continued to bat well, reached his fifty, and was eventually removed by Spinks for 60. As the rain now started to pour down, Strudwick scored freely to reach the target, and Wood Street closed at 179 for 4 from 36 overs.

So, Wood Street can thank the Ahmed brothers for a superb joint performance, whilst Fernhurst go away to lick their wounds and try to put things right next week away to Frensham.
