Bore Draw Feels Good For Fernhurst

Fernhurst went to Frensham thinking that someone in the club must have run over a couple of black cats, or smashed some mirrors. A run of bad luck, unavailability and injuries had left the I'Anson side so short that on Wednesday night there was an undignified possibility of having to concede the game. With only 4 of the side available that had started the season at Witley, and 3 of those carrying significant injuries, things were not looking good. Cue some frantic phonecalls, begging, borrowing and calling in of favours.

So, ten players took the field, including a debut for young George Ede, and Fernhurst can consider themselves very fortunate to have won the toss and elected to bowl. James Bristow, one of the few fit ones, opened the bowling and at the other end Bill Gourlay was limping in off three paces with an achilles injury. Fernhurst took a while to get to grips with the vaguaries of the Frensham ground, with byes scoring heavily over the earlier overs, whilst the openers found their feet. Harrison was lucky to survive a very good LBW call in the early overs, but was then steadily gaining in confidence. He kept the score ticking along, with the short boundaries assisting a six to seven runs per over rate. The Fernhurst bowlers kept plugging away, but the wicket opportunities were very limited, and with only 4 properly "mobile" fielders there were plenty of gaps and few chances of catches being made. Frensham took advantage of the situation and plundered 269 before the first wicket came. Harrison was finally bowled by Mike Allen who, despite nursing a strained shoulder, managed to get through 12 overs. Farncombe played a few lusty blows for 28, before Allen removed his middle stump, and then Harrison, who had become a little marooned after reaching his 50 skyed one to Harry Lambert, who managed to get to the catch despite the double fracture in his foot. Frensham decided that enough was enough after 40 overs, and declared at 316 for 4.

The Fernhurst innings got underway with Boutell and Dowdell attempting to play within themselves, but still finding time to play a few shots. Austin received the majority of the attention, whilst Hamm bowled successive maidens. However, the run rated soon slowed to three to four runs per over, so Frensham brought on Farncombe and Page to try to tempt an error. With the score on 40, Dowdell hit Farncombe over mid-on and look certain of a 6, but Page was thinking fast, placed his foot firmly inside the boundary rope and leant over taking a superb catch one handed. Bristow arrived at the crease with strict orders to play himself in and bat conservatively, so he opened up with a straight six and then set about running plenty of quick singles ! Boutell was next to fall, for 32, as an Earl delivery crept through off his rear pad, and Lambert was dismissed the next ball as one went through the gate. Just four runs later Bristow's fun ended for 32, and Frensham started to sniff that victory might be in sight with Fernhurst now on 82 for 4 with 25 overs to survive. However, Mike Allen and Adam Sales were now at the crease with very clear intentions to play for survival. Allen did well to play within himself, rather than follow his more expansive natural game, albeit he did find time to launch a massive 6 onto the bowling green. Adam Sales, playing his first game of the season quickly settled into the task at hand, and coped very well with the close company of 10 fielders for most of his stay. Frensham threw everything at Fernhurst, using 9 bowlers in total, but could not find a way through the stubborn resistance. With the full fifty overs played, Fernhurst finished up on 169 for 4.

Never has 2 points felt so good, and the Fernhurst walking wounded can be very proud of salvaging something from this match.
