Match report Bourne Win Close Contest

Despite The Stubborn Donkey !

Fernhurst saw a rollercoaster of a match, under changeable skies, against The Bourne. Despite the odd shower, a very entertaining match took place with the advantage changing hands several times through the afternoon.

The Bourne lost the toss and were invited to bat, with the early signs good for them as Stoker and Croucher settled into a strong run rate. However, Bristow and Gourlay put the advantage back into the green corner, with a strong bowling performance and reducing The Bourne to 69 for 3 after 15 overs. Seabrook's arrival changed the tide, as he took the attack to the bowlers and, alongside Stoker the pair pushed the score along to 153 before a run out brought the stand to an end in the 30th over. Stoker managed to make his half century before falling to another run out for 58. The tail wagged well too with Brewer making an impact to reach an unbeaten 30, pushing the score to 215 from 42 overs.

Fernhurst fancied their chances to reach the required total from 48 overs and, as usual, started their response in attacking style with Lambert and Boutell pushing the score to 50 in the 11th over. However, Lambert fell for 22 after some glorious off drives, and the Fernhurst batsmen struggled to deal with Rooke's spin. By 24th over there had been 3 quick wickets from the top order, includin Boutell for 31, and Fernhurst found themselves on 98 for 4. Paul "Donk" Dowdell was still there though, and starting to look comfortable, joined by Gourlay they took the score up to 134 in the 34th over and the game was back in the balance. Despite more wickets by Budd and Charter, things still looked optimistic for Fernhurst whilst Dowdell was at the crease. He continued to dominate the bowling, whilst his partners came and went at the other end. Frommholz now returned to the attack, and was a little too quick for Fernhurst's teenagers, taking a couple of quick wickets - before then taking the prize wicket of Dowdell for a superb 68. Fernhurst now had to last 7 overs, but The Bourne's bowlers kept it tight and earned themselves a good win. Fernhurst finishing on 179 all out in the 44th over.
