Fernhurst Cricket Club Fernhurst U9-internal v Chobham on Fri 03 Jun 2016 at 18:00
Fernhurst Cricket Club Lost by 50 runs

Match report Chobham set the standard for U10s

Early feedback from other opponents in the U10 league had been that Chobham were the strongest team in this age group, and they certainly proved it against Fernhurst with a particularly well drilled performance. However, this was an excellent opportunity for some of our boys to see the level that some of their peers have achieved, which should create some good motivation for those practice sessions.

Captain Louis Eden won the toss and decided to field, with the Fernhurst bowlers responding well and continuing to deliver some very tidy overs. However, the signs were already there that we were playing a much stronger side as, rather than just trying to block the straight balls, the Chobham batsmen were always looking to push a quick single. Anything loose was also being quickly dispatched, in particular by Pye who racked up an unbeaten 26, and at one stage Chobham were on target for a massive score of around 150. To their credit, the Fernhurst bowlers stuck to their task with wickets coming for Kidd and Dahl. Perhaps more importantly, from a coaching perspective, the amount of wides bowled was down by over 50% which was an excellent improvement. Chobham would finish on 120 for 2 from their 20 overs.

Fernhurst's response started well with openers Dahl and Freeborough looking good, whilst also trying to copy the Chobham approach to quick singles. However, as this was a skill still "in development", it wasn't entirely surprising to see a calling mix up result in a run out. The rest of the Fernhurst innings was very respectable with Durrant (8*), Westley (4*), L.Eden (8*), Kidd (8*), Abraham (6*) and Adey (8*) all batting through to retirement, with only the slower scoring rate being the difference between the teams. Fernhurst would finish well short on 70 for 4 from their 20 overs.

Overall, though, a very encouraging performance against an experienced side who have played together since U8s and only lost one match of their last ten! Fernhurst matched them on the bowling and fielding front so, with a little more focus on our batting, we should be able to give Chobham more of a test later on in the season.
