Fernhurst Cricket Club Fernhurst U11 Falcons v Chiddingfold on Sun 08 May 2016 at 10:00
Fernhurst Cricket Club Won with 3 overs remaining

Match report The sun shone down on Fernhurst for the opening junior match of the season, a friendly for the Under 11s versus Chiddingfold. Whilst these players will be playing their league games at U13 or U10 level, this was a great chance to get match ready amongst a narrower age group and a fantastic match ensued.

Alfie Edwards, captaining the side, won the toss and decided to field, which seemed to suit one of Chiddingfold's opening batsmen as he plundered 18 runs before retiring after his 4 overs. However, the Fernhurst bowlers stuck to their task and, in a noticeable improvement on last season, bowled exceptionally straight with very few wides or no balls. Wickets fell reasonably steadily and, in another excellent progression from last season, catches were held by Westley and Adey (despite the oven gloves!). Chiddingfold completed their 20 overs finishing on a respectable 93 for 8. Joe Skelton headed the bowling figures, having kept wicket for the first 10 overs, with 2 wickets for 2 runs off 1 over. Ned Dowling took 2 wickets as well, with other wickets going to Louis Eden, Alfie Edwards, Sam Stevens and Jack Kidd.

After a standard setting morning "tea" and monumental Rocky Road (thank you ladies!) play resumed, with a large crowd of spectators now gathered. The early signs were that Fernhurst might indeed find the road a little rocky, as the Chiddingfold opening bowlers started off with some exceptionally quick deliveries. However, Skelton and Dowling weathered the early storm, running some very good quick singles to get the scoreboard ticking along nicely. In fact, this would be the trend that would eventually win the game for Fernhurst as, whilst the boundaries did not appear particularly regularly, singles were taken at every available opportunity and the pressure sometimes told on the opposition fielders. Chiddingfold also struggled to keep their bowling extras down, and the 26 runs "scored" by wides & no balls would tell in the end. There were certainly a couple of blips along the way, no least with a couple of overly ambitious runs, but that kept the spectators on the edge of their seats. Jack Kidd, however, took this all in his stride scoring 14* runs from his 4 overs, capably supported by Skelton (2*), S.Stevens (7) and L.Eden (11*) who also batted through to retirement. Fernhurst made the target of 94 for 8 with 3 overs to spare.

An excellent start to the season, played in beautiful conditions, and with a superb sporting attitude from both sides. If every game this summer is like this one, we are in for a real treat!
