Match report Grayswood slip bye U10s

The Under 10s went to Grayswood for the final match of the season, knowing that they had come second best to this opposition a couple of months earlier. With the junior pitch arrangement at Grayswood being so close to the pavilion, and a large slope away to the boundary, it was always likely that the team who fielded well would win the match.

Skipper Wilby Westley won the toss and decided to bat, which soon seemed to be a good decision. The first four Fernhurst batsmen; Vigar (6*), Westley (5*), L.Eden (6*) and Kidd (14*) all batted well through to their compulsory retirements with Kidd, once again, hitting a number of glorious shots. The Grayswood bowling also seemed to be contributing nicely, and would end up giving an extra 62 runs to the total. However, despite the fact that Dummer, Simpson and Henry Eden all did well to bat through to unbeaten retirements the runs dried up in the final few overs, with Fernhurst finishing a little short on 102 for 4 from 20 overs.

As Grayswood started their innings, the Fernhurst plan was to bowl straight and not give away any extras, but unfortunately things went awry with 20 runs being given away in just 3 overs. Whilst things would tighten up later on, our extras total was 76, which left our opponents little to do with the bat. The bowlers did stick at it, though, with five wickets being taken by Stronge (1 for 5), Vigar (1 for 1), Dummer (1 for 12), H.Eden (1 for 2) and Kidd (1 for 4). Two of the wickets were catches, one by Stronge and the other, a truly excellent one, by Clay. Grayswood's innings was dominated by Harry, who scored a match winning 23*, pushing them past the total in the 17th over and finishing on 119 for 5 from 18 overs.

The Under 10s competitive season, then, draws to a close and whilst on paper the results may look a little disappointing, they have made vast improvements over the course of the season. With four losses firmly filed under "ones that got away", they compete well and with a little fine tuning should be able to convert a few of these into wins next year. One area, though, where they swept all before them was in their excellent manners, attitude and sportsmanship which, in many ways, is the most important thing at this age.
